Growing up at home during my younger years, a picnic ham was pretty much reserved for a holiday meal.  Sometimes we’d also have one for a Sunday dinner when we were having guests over or, maybe we some other special occasion to celebrate.  The point is, we just didn’t have them except for a couple of times a year. Insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the meat but do not press it against the bone. The kitchen cooks ours to an internal temperature of just above 160º.
